Expert Fire Protection for Structural Steel

Protecting structural steel to meet fire safety regulations

Structural steel is known for its strength and versatility, but its durability is compromised in the event of a fire. Once temperatures exceed around 550 °C, steel beams and columns can begin to buckle, increasing the likelihood of failure. Therefore, current building regulations continue to place a strong emphasis on fire resistance for structural elements.

Enhancing fire resistance for structural steel

By incorporating a passive fire protection system, such as cementitious spray, intumescent paint or fire boarding, steel’s structural integrity and load-bearing capacity can be greatly enhanced. This maximises the amount of time for emergency responders to extinguish flames and evacuate buildings before they collapse.

Sharpfibre offers a range of services to enhance structural steel as part of a specialist passive fire protection strategy, giving building owners assurance that they’re complying with industry regulations and protected for the future.

Cementitious spray fireproofing for steel

Cementitious fire spraying is a fast and efficient method of upgrading the fire performance of concrete and steel structural elements. They are most commonly applied to steel and concrete frames, metal floors or roof decks and return air plenums, providing up to 240 minutes of fire protection.

Used in the commercial and petrochemical markets and for tunnel fire protection, the main advantage of cementitious sprays is that they can withstand impact and abrasion, yet remain flexible enough to accept design changes without incurring major cost and time delays. They may be applied within environments where limited exposure to the elements is likely throughout the building phase of the project.

Boarded fire protection systems

As the original means of structural fire protection, boarding systems have seen major developments, continuing to provide a non-combustible and cost-efficient means of ensuring up to 240 minutes of fire protection for structural steel.

Fire protection boards are highly versatile and can be used both where the protection system is in full view and where it is hidden. Additionally, due to being factory-manufactured, boarded systems guarantee consistency and durability – they are both resistant to water and beneficial to acoustic performance. They can also accept decorative applications, such as paint or plaster, providing an aesthetic finish without the need for further preparation.

Intumescent spray fireproofing for steel beams

Intumescent coatings refer to a range of materials that provide an appearance similar to that of paint, with basic to high-gloss finishes now available. These coatings remain stable at ambient temperatures but undergo a complex chemical reaction at temperatures of about 200-250°C.

More specifically, in the event of a fire, intumescent coatings expand to many times their original thickness. This expansion provides an insulating foam-like coating or “char” which, in some instances, can be up to 50 times its initial applied thickness. It is this “char” that offers up to 120 minutes of fire protection to structural steel work.

It is phenomenal to see the progress that has been made on the rebuild since demolition was completed in March… What really impressed me was the level of communication and cooperation you have generated… What gave me confidence today was the quality of the build I saw – no evidence that build quality is being impaired by schedule yet…
