Intumescent Spraying and Painting for Structural Steel

Intumescent paint
offers vital fire protection for structural steel
When exposed to fire, the paint undergoes a chemical reaction that causes it to swell and form a thickened char layer. This insulates steel from fire damage, preventing underlying structural elements from reaching critical temperatures and helping to maintain the resilience and load-bearing capacity of beams and columns.
How does intumescent paint work?
Intumescent paint contains compounds that react when exposed to heat. The coating melts into a foam and releases gases once temperatures rise above around 200°C. This foam then solidifies and expands into a carbonaceous layer (that can be up to 50 times the original thickness of the intumescent coating), preventing heat from weakening the structural steel. Once the fire has been extinguished, this layer is then cleaned away so that intumescent coatings can be reapplied.

Experienced and accredited intumescent paint installers
When applied by accredited experts such as Sharpfibre and maintained over time, intumescent paint can provide decades of protection to multiple services, including steel, wood and concrete.
Our team of contractors are well-versed in various methods of intumescent paint application, using spray equipment, brushes or rollers to apply water-based, solvent-based and epoxy intumescent coatings. These coatings are compatible with multiple primers, minimising any additional load on steel structures while also adding decorative top coats to meet any aesthetic finish requirements.
We specialise in both onsite and offsite applications, so clients have the flexibility to tailor intumescent painting to meet individual project requirements, timescales and budgets. Both approaches are viable based on project needs, and our fully-accredited team will work diligently under strict conditions (e.g. controlled temperatures and unobstructed access) to ensure all intumescent coatings meet the highest possible standards of quality and compliance.

It is phenomenal to see the progress that has been made on the rebuild since demolition was completed in March… What really impressed me was the level of communication and cooperation you have generated… What gave me confidence today was the quality of the build I saw – no evidence that build quality is being impaired by schedule yet…
