Overview
Westfield approached Sharpfibre to begin preliminary discussions in February 2006 for the provision of the Structural Fire Protection works package. In June 2006 negotiations were concluded and Sharpfibre was awarded the contract to carry out the installation of boarded fire protection to the structural steel beams and columns that made up the shopping centre structure.
What we did
The main works commenced in August 2006 and completed just over 2 years later in September 2008 ready for the grand opening of the centre on the 30th October. Sharpfibre also designed and installed Promat DURASTEEL® Blast Barriers to the power generation building contained on the site, which at 25m high is the tallest barrier installed in UK to date.
During this time on site Sharpfibre directly employed over 150 operatives, completing a total of 352,000 hours on site. The safe working practices of the project team and the systems of work employed, helped Sharpfibre secure the Westfield Site Safety Award on two separate occasions beating no fewer than 15 other trade contractors to the coveted prize.
Boarded Fire Protection Systems
Boarded fire protection systems offer a non-combustible and cost efficient method of providing up to 240 minutes fire protection to structural steelwork. As the original means of affording structural fire protection, this method has seen major developments in the types of boards available today.
Boarded fire protection systems can be durable, resistant to water and beneficial to acoustic performance. Certain fire boarded systems are able to accept decorative applications, such as paint or plaster, providing an aesthetic finish without the need for further preparation.
