Overview
Sharpfibre would typically take possession of three floors at a time, providing full encapsulation to the inside and outside too. With as many teams is necessary, wherever they are required.
The requirement for structural steel protection to 90 and 120 minutes and an extremely demanding build programme meant that the Cementitious Fire Spray passive fire protection adopted took into account logistics, speed of application and stringent environmental controls. With a total of 80,000m² of structural steelwork to be protected at the rate of one floor per week, Cementitious Fire Spray was fast to apply and quick to cure, whilst being able to withstand exposure to the elements once applied. Strict environmental controls and regular air monitoring imposed by the Corporation of London, as well as a completely exposed building envelope and high wind speeds where all accommodated by our unique Encapsulation system.
What we did
With a bespoke purpose build pumping station located on the ground floor meant that the mixed materials could be supplied direct to the entire building from one location. Using one of the building services risers, aluminium riser pipes were installed; allowing the materials to be pumped centrally without the need of the already heavily utilised tower cranes or hoists.
Fire protection works began on site in June 2012 and despite especially cold weather and snow during the winter months, the Cementitious Fire Spray application was completed on time in March 2013. In addition to this, in excess of 10,000 openings including service penetrations and ducts had been fire stopped.
Keeping ahead of the trades following below, the highest of the three floors is encapsulated providing as much protection as possible to the walls and floors whilst spraying commences on the middle of the three floors.
All fed from one single pump station – Sharpfibre are one of the very few contractors in the UK with this technology. One pump station means it is permanently sited throughout the project with no need to move the pump station up, through the building giving cost savings and improving the program. The lower of the three floors is cleaned, the encapsulation is removed, with the floor being completely cleaned ready to hand back to the client. Leaving the floors below protected and ready for other trades to commence their works.
