As part of the White City development, Wood Lane tube station will serve as key transport hub supporting the new £1.6 billion shopping and leisure centre. Wood Lane station, which is the first new station on an existing and un-extended Tube line for over 70 years, will be located between Shepherd's Bush Market and Latimer Road stations.
The project design team specified Promat DURASTEEL® as a solution for two elements of the station structure. These included two passenger lift shafts and both the east bound and west bound passenger escape staircases. Working in partnership with the construction and design teams, Sharpfibre carried out the design and installation of the lift shafts incorporating a twin skinned DURASTEEL® barrier fixed onto an arrangement of cold formed channels and angles. When completed, the two lift shafts incorporated in excess of 350m2 of Promat DURASTEEL® sheets and 16,000 specialist fixings.
The escape passenger staircases had a similar design structure based upon a twin skinned DURASTEEL® barrier, which provide a safe means of escape for passengers in the event of a fire at platform level. A key factor in the decision making process was that a large part of the two barriers were to be fully exposed to the external environment. After consultation with Promat Technical Services, Promat DURASTEEL® was specified as the choice of material to satisfy both the fire performance and the external exposure requirements for the project. Once completed, over 300m2 of DURASTEEL® was supplied and installed to provide a robust and proven solution in this extremely demanding location.
