“From the first stages of their involvement, Sharpfibre have helped deliver what is a critical part of this extremely challenging project.”
Jean-François Scheidt – Director, Bouygues Bâtiment
Located in the heart of Paris and spread over 13 hectares, Jussieu is a large student campus incorporating the universities of Pierre et Marie Curie, Denis Diderot and the Physics Institution of Paris. In the center of the campus is built the Tour Zamansky tower, with 24 floors and a height of 90 metres.
Built in 1971, the campus was originally designed to receive between 20 and 25,000 students and staff. However, with the population now exceeding 45,000 occupants, a complete upgrade and expansion programme needed to be undertaken to bring the campus up to date in terms of legislation and security.
Main contractor Bouygues began works on site in September 2007 to the West sector of the university under the title of Marché 7. Under this contract, Sharpfibre began the work to fire protect the existing structural steel work in January 2008. In order to provide the necessary level of fire protection now required, the existing steelwork had to be removed of its lead based paint coating. Incorporating, co-coordinating and managing the shot blasting within our works was just one of the elements that made Sharpfibre the right choice for Bouygues.
Working to an extremely restricted building programme and interfacing with the façade installers to eliminate damage will see the deployment of skilled paint applicators until the third quarter of 2010.
Works under the title of Marché 8 began in January 2009 with an expected further two contracts still to be awarded as part of the overall re-development scheme.
